Love as the foundation of life

Mark 12:29-31 (Contemporary English Version )
“Jesus answered, ‘The most important one says: “People of Israël, listen! The Lord our
God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and
strength.” The second most important one says: “Love others as much as you love
yourself.” No other commandment is more important than these.’”

Back to the core
These are the words of Jesus in a conversation with a teacher of the law. In that time there were many rules and laws. People tried to know exactly what was allowed and what was not. But Jesus brings everything back to the core: love.
Not a vague feeling, but a deep, conscious choice. Love for God and love for your neighbor. With that, He actually summarizes the whole of life.
When you pause to think about it, you notice how simple and yet how deep this is.

Historical background
In the time of Jesus, Jews lived by the law of Moses, which consisted of hundreds of commandments. Religious leaders often discussed which commandment was the most important.
Jesus refers back to the “Shema” from Deuteronomy 6, a prayer that Jews prayed daily. By connecting it to love for the neighbor, He shows that faith is never separate from how you treat people.
That was refreshing then, but it is actually very recognizable for us today.

Love in practice
Love may sound big and abstract, but it becomes visible in small things.
In the church you see it when people care for one another. Someone visiting another person in a difficult time. Or someone who listens without judgment.
In society you see it when people help each other, even if they do not know each other. Think of volunteer work, caring for the elderly, or simply a kind word at the right moment.
Love is not only what you feel, but what you do.

Close and personal
If I am honest, I sometimes find this quite difficult. Because loving with all your heart also means giving yourself. Being patient, even when it is hard. Forgiving, even when it hurts.
Maybe you recognize that too.
But that is exactly where something beautiful lies. You do not have to do it perfectly. It starts small. One choice today. A step toward God. A gesture toward someone else.

Living together through love
When people take this seriously, something changes. In families, in churches, in neighborhoods. There is room, understanding, and connection.
Without love, rules become hard and empty. But with love, they gain meaning.
That is what Jesus makes clear: it is not about perfect behavior, but about a heart that is focused on God and on others.

Final thought
Love is not a side issue, but the core of life.
Maybe you do not have to understand or do everything today. Maybe it is enough to take one thing with you: choose to love.
Because that is where faith truly comes to life.
