Not the Light, but a Signpost

John 1:8 (KJV)
He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

Encouragement for Today

This verse takes pressure off your shoulders. John did not have to be the Light himself. He did not have to be perfect, always strong, or always have the right words. His calling was simpler, and at the same time deeply valuable: to point to the Light.

That is often true for us as well. In a time when many people are searching for certainty, it can feel like you must explain everything or fix everything. But God does not ask you to save everyone. He asks you to be honest, faithful, and to show where your hope comes from. Sometimes that means saying, “I don’t have all the answers, but I trust God.” That kind of honesty can help someone breathe again.

You are not the source of hope, but you can open a door. You can be a signpost. A small light along the road. And that is enough.

In the church:

  • A leader who makes room for questions without judgment
  • Someone who notices a person standing alone after the service
  • A prayer partner who keeps carrying the burden, even when it takes time

In society:

  • A coworker who stays calm and refuses cynicism
  • A neighbor who offers practical help without seeking attention
  • A friend who dares to say, “Shall we pray together?”

You may not be the answer to everything, but you can point to the One who is.

Question to Pause and Reflect

Where do you feel pressure to “be the Light”? And what would it look like today to simply point to Jesus?

Closing Thought

John 1:8 makes it clear: God uses ordinary people. Not because they are perfect, but because they are willing to point to Christ.

Take This With You

  • You do not have to be perfect to help.
  • Be a signpost, not a savior.
  • A small act can bring someone closer to the Light.
