Who Is Asking the Questions?

John 1:24 (CEV)
The people who had been sent to John were Pharisees.

What Does This Text Say?
John 1:24 may seem like a short and simple sentence, but it says a lot. The questions asked of John the Baptist do not come from just anyone. They come from the Pharisees. These were religious leaders who placed great importance on rules, traditions, and control. They wanted to know who John was and why he did what he did.
This is important to notice. Sometimes it is not only the question that matters, but also who is asking the question. The Pharisees were mainly concerned with order, power, and influence. John realizes this, yet he remains faithful to his calling. He is not intimidated and does not change his message.
This is encouraging. We also receive questions, criticism, or comments. Not everyone asks out of sincere interest. Still, we are allowed to stand firm in who we are and in what God has entrusted to us.

Examples from Church and Society

Church
In the church, this can mean being questioned about why you do something—or why you do not. Perhaps someone holds tightly to old traditions. In that case, it is important to listen with respect, but also to remain faithful to your conviction.

Society
You can recognize this in society as well. Think of a colleague who is critical of your choices. Or someone who judges you without really knowing you. This also happens often on social media. The question then becomes: do I let myself be guided by the opinions of others, or do I stay true to myself?

A Question to Reflect On
• Whose opinions influence my choices?
• How do I respond to criticism or difficult questions?

Closing Thought
John the Baptist shows that you can stand firm, even when questions come from a critical place. God asks for faithfulness, not fear.

Take This With You
• Not every question comes from the same intention
• You do not have to please everyone
• Stay faithful to what God has entrusted to you

To Close
John 1:24 invites us to live with awareness. Those who learn to recognize who is asking the questions can continue their journey with peace and confidence. That makes this message worth sharing.
