Genesis 1:27 (CEV)
So God created humans to be like himself;
he made men and women.
These words show how special human beings are. Among everything God created, humanity has a unique place. Not because we are stronger, but because we reflect our Creator.
Historical Background
Genesis was written in a time when surrounding nations believed that only kings were the “image of god.” Ordinary people were considered less important.
The Bible says something radically different:
• Not only a king, but every person is created in God’s image.
• Both man and woman share equal value.
• Dignity comes from God, not from status or power.
This was revolutionary in the ancient world. It gave people identity and meaning.
Examples from the Church and Society
In the church:
• Everyone is welcome, regardless of background.
• Equal value of men and women.
• Care for the vulnerable, because they bear God’s image.
In society:
• Standing up for human rights.
• Respect for every person, regardless of origin.
• Rejecting discrimination and injustice.
If every person carries God’s image, it changes the way we look at one another.
Final Reflection
You may struggle with self-worth.
This verse says: your value is rooted in God’s creation.
You are not just a person.
You are wanted.
You are created with purpose.
That gives hope and strength.
Take This With You
- You bear God’s image.
- Every person has equal value.
- Dignity comes from God.
- Treat others with respect.
In Closing
Genesis 1:27 reminds us who we are.
Not defined by achievements, possessions, or position—but by God Himself.
Live from that identity.
See God’s image in yourself.
And recognize it in others.
