Ephesians 5:1–2 (Contemporary English Version)
“Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children. Let love be your guide.
Christ loved us and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God.”

Historical Background
The letter to the Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul, likely while he was in prison. He addressed Christians in and around Ephesus, an important city in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey).

Ephesus was a center of trade, religion, and culture. The temple of Artemis stood there. Many people lived in a society where power, status, and honor were highly valued.

Paul calls believers to live differently. Not from self-interest, but from love. He points to Christ as the example. His life and sacrifice show what true love means: giving yourself for others.

Examples from the Church and Society

In the Church
Churches are made up of people with different backgrounds and personalities. Sometimes tensions or misunderstandings arise. Ephesians 5:1–2 reminds us that love is the foundation.

Love means being patient, forgiving, listening, and supporting one another. Not because it is easy, but because Christ has shown us what it looks like.

When a church helps one another in difficult times, or walks together in prayer and care, this passage becomes visible in daily life.

In Society
Outside the church, love is not always natural. In work, politics, and social media, harsh words and self-interest are common.

Paul’s words remain relevant. Showing love does not mean being weak, but choosing respect and encouragement. It takes courage to remain kind when others are harsh.

In a culture focused on achievement, this passage points to dedication and sincere care for others.

Final Thought
Ephesians 5:1–2 invites us to follow God’s example. Loving God and following His example begins in everyday life. Love is not only a feeling, but a choice and an action.

Take This With You
• Choose an attitude of love each day.
• Forgive where needed.
• Be willing to give something of yourself.
• Look to Christ as your example.

In Conclusion
Love changes relationships, communities, and hearts. Whoever lives in love reflects something of God’s character. It is a path that may require effort, but it brings deep joy — for yourself and for others.
