Do not be afraid — just keep believing

Mark 5:36 (Contemporary English Version)
“But Jesus overheard what they said and told the synagogue leader, Don’t be afraid.
Just have faith.”

Jesus spoke these words to Jairus, a man who was desperate because his daughter was dying. People said it was too late. Yet Jesus responded differently. He did not give a long explanation, but one simple message: do not let fear win — keep trusting.

Historical background

In the time of Jesus, illness was often a disaster for a family. There were very few medical treatments. When someone became seriously ill, there was often little hope.

Jairus was also a leader of the synagogue. This meant he held a respected religious position within the Jewish community. Yet he came humbly to Jesus to ask for help.

While Jesus was on the way to his house, the message came:
“Your daughter has died.”

For many people that would mean the end. But Jesus immediately responded with these words: “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.”

Later in the story, Jesus even raises the girl back to life. This made a deep impression on the people of Galilee.

Historically, this story shows that Jesus did not only speak about faith, but also gave confidence in situations that seemed hopeless.

Examples from church and society

This message is still often used in difficult times.

In churches

  • Pastors use this text in pastoral conversations.
  • During illness or loss, the passage is read to give hope.
  • In prayer services, this sentence is often repeated.

In society

  • People going through a crisis (illness, loss of work) find comfort in these words.
  • In hospitals, Bible passages like this are sometimes read by chaplains.
  • Aid organizations refer to faith as a source of courage.

The point is not to deny problems, but not to give up when fear appears.

Take this with you

This short sentence of Jesus contains three important lessons:

  • Fear is a natural reaction.
  • Fear does not have to have the final word.
  • Trust can give strength in difficult moments.

Faith here does not mean everything immediately becomes good, but that hope remains.

Final reflection

The words of Jesus to Jairus are simple yet powerful. They have spoken to people for almost two thousand years. When circumstances become heavy, this message can help people not to despair.

Fear looks at what seems lost.
Faith looks at what is still possible.

In conclusion

Mark 5:36 invites people to make a choice in difficult situations: keep listening to fear, or hold on to trust.

For many believers, this sentence is therefore a lasting reminder:

“Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.”
