Light in the world

Matthew 5:14–16 (Contemporary English Version)
“You are the light for the whole world.
A city built on top of a hill cannot be hidden.
No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a bowl.
Instead, it is put on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house.
Make your light shine,
so that others will see the good that you do
and will praise your Father in heaven.”

These words come from the famous teaching of Jesus Christ. Here He speaks to His disciples and to the people who listen to Him. His message is clear: faith is not only something inside your heart. It must be visible in how you live and how you treat others.

Historical background

These words are found in the Gospel of Matthew and are part of the well-known Sermon on the Mount. In the time of Jesus many people lived in small villages and towns. At night there was very little light. A small oil lamp could light an entire house.

That is why the image of a lamp was very familiar to the listeners. When someone lit a lamp, it was not meant to be hidden. The purpose of light is to shine.

Jesus uses this simple example to say something deeper. People who follow God should bring light into their surroundings: by doing good, living honestly, and helping others.

In the first Christian communities this message became important. Believers wanted to show that their faith could be seen in their behavior.

Examples from church and society

In the church

  • Many churches encourage people to live their faith in practical ways, for example through volunteer work.
  • Church members help the sick, the elderly, or people who are going through difficult times.
  • Churches organize food support, shelter, or assistance for people in need.

In society

  • People show “light” when they help others without expecting something in return.
  • Volunteers who support the poor, refugees, or lonely elderly people give an example of compassion.
  • Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

A simple example:
A neighbor notices that an elderly woman has difficulty doing her shopping. He helps her regularly. For her this means a lot. In this way, a small act can become a light in someone’s life.

Final reflection

The words of Jesus remind us that doing good may be visible. Not to receive attention, but to show something of God’s love.

Light drives away darkness. Even a small light can make a difference.

Take this with you

  • Faith becomes visible through actions.
  • Small good deeds can mean a lot.
  • Everyone can be a light for others.
  • Kindness and honesty can bring hope.

In closing

Matthew 5:14–16 encourages people to let their light shine. This means living in a way that helps, encourages, and gives hope to others.

The world needs light. Sometimes it begins with one small act of kindness. Yet such acts can inspire others and bring new hope.
