Nothing can separate us from God’s love

Romans 8:35–37 (Contemporary English Version)
“Can anything separate us from the love of Christ?
Can trouble, suffering, and hard times, or hunger and nakedness,
or danger and death?
It is exactly as the Scriptures say,
‘For you we face death all day long.
We are like sheep on their way to be butchered.’

These words come from a letter of Paul the Apostle. He wants to encourage believers. Life can be difficult, but God’s love remains stronger than all hardships.

Historical background

The text is found in the Epistle to the Romans. Paul wrote this letter to Christians living in the city of Rome. At that time believers often lived under pressure. Some people were mocked or persecuted because of their faith.

Rome was the center of the great Roman Empire. The Christian community there consisted of different groups of people: Jews, Greeks, and Romans. They lived in a society where the Christian faith was still new and sometimes misunderstood.

Paul wanted to give these believers courage. He writes that hardships, danger, or even persecution do not mean that God has abandoned people. On the contrary, in difficult times God’s love can become visible.

The words “more than conquerors” mean that believers do not only endure hardship, but that God’s love gives them strength to keep moving forward.

Examples from church and society

In the church

  • Many believers read this text when they are going through difficult times.
  • In church services it is often emphasized that God’s love does not change because of circumstances.
  • Pastors use these words to encourage people who are facing sorrow or worries.

In society

  • People sometimes experience setbacks: illness, loss of work, or difficult relationships.
  • In such moments people search for hope and strength to continue.
  • Communities and friends can offer support when someone is struggling.

A simple example:
Someone loses his job and feels uncertain about the future. Family and friends continue to support and encourage him. Slowly he finds hope again.

Final reflection

Paul’s message is clear: difficult circumstances can make life heavy, but they do not have the final word.

According to this text, God’s love always remains present.

Take this with you

  • Difficult times are part of life.
  • God’s love is stronger than circumstances.
  • Hope can remain, even in hard moments.
  • Support from others can help us keep going.

In closing

Romans 8:35–37 encourages people to take courage. It says that nothing—no problem, no fear, no hardship—is stronger than God’s love.

Throughout the centuries this thought has helped many people endure. When life becomes difficult, this message can remind us of a deep hope: love is stronger than everything.
