Genesis 1:1 (Contemporary English Version)
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Historical background
These words stand at the very beginning of the Bible. They were written in a time when nations surrounding Israël believed the world came into being through chaos, battles between gods, or by chance. But here something radically different is heard: one God, Elohim, who deliberately and purposefully brings everything into existence. Not from something that already existed, but out of nothing. This immediately shapes how we view our lives: we are not an accident, but intended.
What does this mean for you and me?
If God is the beginning of everything, then it also means that He is involved in your beginning, your story. You may sometimes feel small or lost in this world. But this text says: your life is not disconnected; it has an origin and a purpose.
In the church you see this reflected when people gather to give thanks and to seek God’s will. In society you see it when people, despite chaos, still long for order, justice, and meaning. That longing comes from somewhere.
Examples from daily life
Think of someone going through a difficult period, such as loss or uncertainty. If you believe everything is random, it often feels empty. But if you believe that God is the beginning, then hope arises: there is Someone who stands above the situation.
In the church you often hear testimonies from people who say, “I didn’t know what to do anymore, but God brought light.” That connects with Genesis: first there was emptiness, and then God spoke.
Encouragement
You may wonder where your life is heading. Then do not start with your problems, but with God. Just as He was the beginning of the world, He also wants to give a new beginning in your life.
He is still creating: hope where there is despair, direction where there is confusion.
Final thought
In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth [out of nothing]. That means your life is never without hope. If God can make something out of nothing, then He can also bring something new into being in your situation. Keep trusting in that.
