Being great by serving

Mark 9:35 (Contemporary English Version)
“If you want the place of honor, you must become a slave and serve others!”

Jesus spoke differently about greatness

In Mark 9, the disciples were walking together with Jesus through Galilee. Along the way, they had argued about which one of them was the greatest. That may sound strange, but it is actually very human. People want to be noticed, to have influence, and to feel important.

When they arrived, Jesus asked what they had been discussing on the road. The disciples felt ashamed and stayed silent. Then Jesus sat down and gave teaching that was completely different from the thinking of the world. He said that true greatness does not begin with power, but with serving.

In the time of Jesus, children had very little status in society. They were often seen as unimportant. Yet Jesus placed a child in the middle of the disciples. By doing this, He showed that God’s Kingdom sees value and importance differently.

Serving requires humility

Jesus did not mean that people should think they are worthless. He showed that love becomes visible through service. A servant-hearted attitude means you do not think only about yourself, but also care about others.

You can see this in a church when someone quietly helps without seeking attention. Or when a person visits an elderly member who is often forgotten. These things may seem small, but in God’s eyes they carry great value.

In society, success is often connected to status, money, or influence. People are admired for achievements and appearance. But Jesus turns that upside down. He looks at the heart of a person. Someone who is willing to help others reflects something of God’s character.

A child in the middle

When Jesus embraced a child, He gave a deep lesson. He said that whoever welcomes a child in His name welcomes Him. Through this, He teaches that caring for vulnerable people matters deeply in God’s Kingdom.

Today, this may mean making time for someone who is lonely, listening patiently to a child, or giving attention to people who are often overlooked.

Final thought

“If you want the place of honor, you must become a slave and serve others!” — Mark 9:35, Contemporary English Version

Jesus shows that true greatness is not found in lifting yourself higher, but in serving others with love. It is often through small acts of care, kindness, and humility that God’s Kingdom becomes visible in this world.
