Living in God’s light

1John 1:5 (Contemporary English Version)
“Jesus told us God is light and doesn't have any darkness in him. Now we are telling you”

Light in a dark world

Sometimes life can feel dark. People carry worries, guilt, sadness, or fear inside them. The world around us can also feel harsh and confusing. You see division, dishonesty, and distrust growing everywhere. It is exactly in such a world that the words of John sound powerful and hopeful: God is light.

Light gives direction. When it is dark, you can stumble or lose your way. But light helps you see where you are going again. In the same way, God wants to work in people’s lives. He wants to bring truth, peace, and hope into hearts that feel tired or uncertain.

John shows that there is no darkness in God at all. This means that He is completely good, honest, and trustworthy.

Historical background

The apostle John wrote his letter to Christians living in a time of confusion. Some people claimed that it was possible to live with God without truly changing inwardly. Others twisted the message of Jesus.

John wanted to give believers certainty. He reminded them that faith is not only about words or knowledge, but also becomes visible in the way people live. Walking in the light means living honestly before God and before one another.

This was important for the first Christian communities. Believers lived in the middle of a society filled with idolatry, inequality, and moral confusion. John encouraged them to remain close to God’s truth.

God’s light seen in church and society

Many people today are still searching for truth and stability. In society, people often try to find happiness in success, possessions, or popularity, yet inner emptiness often remains.

God’s light becomes visible when people choose honesty, love, and sincerity. In churches this happens when people forgive one another, pray together, and dare to be open about their struggles. A church member faithfully visiting lonely elderly people. A young person remaining honest while others follow harmful choices. Such small acts bring light into dark situations.

You can also see this outside the church. A neighbor helping without expecting anything in return. People choosing peace instead of conflict. These things reflect something of God’s character.

Final thought

1 John 1:5 reminds us that God is light and never changes. In Him there is no deceit, evil, or darkness. When you live close to Him, His light can also fill your life with truth, peace, and hope. Even during difficult times, God’s light remains stronger than the darkness.
