Matthew 10:29-31 – (Contemporary English Version)
“Two sparrows are sold for only a penny, but your Father knows when any one of them falls to the ground. Even the hairs on your head are counted. So don't be afraid. You are worth much more than many sparrows.”
A message of comfort in uncertain times
When Jesus spoke these words, He was speaking to disciples who were uncertain about the future. They would go through difficult times, face opposition, and sometimes become afraid because of worries and misunderstanding. That is why Jesus does not speak harshly or from a distance, but warmly, personally, and with comfort.
He points to something very simple from everyday life: a small sparrow. In those days, sparrows were cheap birds that almost nobody paid attention to. Yet Jesus says that not one sparrow falls to the ground without God seeing it.
Then Jesus makes it even more personal: even the hairs on your head are known by God.
This shows how deeply God cares for people.
God sees people who feel small or forgotten
Many people today feel tired, uncertain, or invisible. Society often revolves around performance, success, and appearance. Because of this, people can begin to think they only have value when they are strong, popular, or successful.
Even in the church, people sometimes carry silent burdens. People who are grieving, lonely, or wondering if anyone truly understands what they are going through. Sometimes people smile on the outside while inwardly struggling with fear, disappointment, or exhaustion.
It is to such people that Jesus says: do not be afraid.
God looks differently than people do. He does not only look at achievements or outward appearance, but at the heart of a person. No one is unimportant to Him. He knows people personally, with all their sorrow, questions, and worries.
God’s care remains close
Jesus shows that God pays attention to things people often forget. Where people sometimes pass by each other without noticing pain, God remains involved in the lives of people.
That does not mean difficult situations disappear immediately, but it does mean that no one has to carry heavy burdens alone. God knows sorrow and worries even before people speak about them.
Just as a loving father cares for his children, God cares for those who seek Him.
Final thought
Matthew 10:29-31 reminds us that no person is forgotten by God. If He cares about small birds, how much more will He care for the people He loves. That is why you do not have to remain trapped in fear or uncertainty. In God’s eyes, you are valuable, loved, and never alone.
