Ezekiel 39:29 (Contemporary English Version)
"And I, the LORD God, will stop turning away from them and will let my Spirit be poured out on the people of Israel."
A promise that still stands
These words were spoken during a time of deep crisis. The prophet Ezekiel lived among the Jewish exiles in Babylon. The people had lost much. Their land had been destroyed, the temple lay in ruins, and the future seemed uncertain. Many wondered where God was and whether He had abandoned them. It was in those dark circumstances that God spoke words of hope, restoration, and future blessing. Ezekiel showed that God's plans reach far beyond the difficulties of the present moment.
The historical background makes this promise especially powerful. Israel had often turned away from God and made wrong choices. Yet God remained faithful to His covenant. His love was greater than their failures, and His faithfulness did not depend on human performance. Therefore, He promised that He would no longer hide Himself and that He would pour out His Spirit upon His people. God was looking not only at their past but also at the future He wanted to open before them.
God does not lose sight of people
Sometimes people wonder where God is. Grief, illness, loss, disappointment, or uncertainty can create the feeling that God is far away. Ezekiel's message shows exactly the opposite: God does not forget people. His desire is to be near. He sees our worries, knows our questions, and understands what is in our hearts. Even when we cannot see a way forward, He remains involved in our lives.
That was true for Israel during the exile, and it remains true today. In the church, we hear testimonies from people who experience God's comfort during difficult circumstances. In society, many find renewed courage despite great challenges because they learn to trust God's guidance. His presence provides strength when human resources are not enough.
The Spirit who gives new life
God's promise goes beyond restoring circumstances. He promises His Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps people know God more deeply, understand His love, and follow His guidance. He gives courage when we are afraid, wisdom when we are uncertain, and strength when we feel weak. In this way, we are reminded that we never have to face life alone.
Final thought
Ezekiel 39:29 shows how great God's desire is to be close to people. Even when people lose their way, God continues to seek them. His faithfulness is stronger than human failure, and His love never comes to an end. Therefore, we do not have to face the future with fear. The God who gave hope to Israel during the exile is the same God who comforts, guides, and renews people today. Those who place their trust in Him discover that His presence provides peace for today, strength for difficult moments, and hope for every new day.
