1 Kings 12:1–5 (Contemporary English Version)
"Rehoboam went to Shechem, where everyone in Israël had gathered to make him king. Jeroboam had been living in Egypt, but when he heard the news, he returned. He and all the people of Israël came to Rehoboam and said, 'Your father placed a heavy burden on us. Make our hard work and the heavy load he put on us easier, and we will serve you.' Rehoboam replied, 'Come back in three days.' So the people left."

Listen with an open heart

Listening makes the difference

Everyone longs to be truly heard. Perhaps you also wish that someone would quietly listen to you without immediately judging or interrupting. The Bible shows how valuable a listening heart is. God wants us not to be quick to speak, but first to listen carefully. When we truly listen, we show love, respect, and wisdom. That is how trust grows and peace begins.

A message from history

After the death of King Solomon, his son Rehoboam became king. The people asked him to make the heavy burdens his father had placed on them lighter. Rehoboam had the opportunity to listen before making his decision. That moment became a turning point in Israël’s history. This story shows that wise leaders are willing to listen before they speak or act. A listening heart often prevents division and brings people closer together.

Listening still makes a difference today

Misunderstandings still arise because people do not truly listen to one another. This happens in families, at work, in society, and sometimes even in the church. Yet we also see how much can change when people give genuine attention. A church member who listens to someone who is hurting, a parent who takes time for a child, a co-worker who responds without judging, or a volunteer who spends time with someone who is lonely all reflect God's love.

Final thought

God listens to your prayers and knows your heart. He also invites you to listen carefully to others. A listening heart can bring hope, restore relationships, and build peace. “Make our hard work and the heavy load easier, and we will serve you.” 1 Kings 12:4 (Contemporary English Version).
