John 1:33 (CEV)
“I did not know who he was. But the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
‘The one on whom you see the Spirit come down and stay is the one who baptizes with
the Holy Spirit.’”
What Does This Text Say?
In John 1:33, John the Baptist explains how he recognizes Jesus. Not through his own
insight or experience, but because God showed him. God gave a clear sign: the Spirit
would come down and remain. That happened with Jesus. In this way, John knows for
sure: this is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
This is an encouraging message. John did not have to figure it out on his own. God
gave direction and clarity. The same is true for us: we do not have to understand or
carry everything by ourselves. God wants to guide us and show us what truly matters.
This text makes clear that Jesus does more than bring outward change. John baptized
with water as a sign. Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit: He changes people from the
inside, giving new life, strength, and hope.
In the church, you see this when people notice that their faith changes them from
within. Someone gains new courage, learns to forgive, or finds peace. This is not an
achievement, but the work of God’s Spirit.
You also see this in society. Think of people who change in how they treat
others—more patience, more love, more responsibility. Sometimes it is hard to explain
how this happens, but the effect is clearly visible.
