John 1:27 (CEV)
“He comes after me, but I am not good enough even to untie his sandals.”
What Does This Text Say?
In John 1:27, John the Baptist speaks about Jesus with deep respect. People look at
John, listen to him, and ask him questions. Yet John does not place himself at the
center. He deliberately points to the One who is coming: Jesus. He even says that he
is not worthy to do the simplest task for Him.
This is a powerful and encouraging message. John knows who he is, but also who he
is not. He does not need to prove himself or make himself look important. His value is
not found in his position, but in his attitude of humility and faithfulness.
This text teaches us that it is good to know our place. Life is not only about ourselves.
When we make room for God, peace and direction come into our lives.
In the church, you see this in people who serve without seeking recognition. Think of
someone who helps behind the scenes, prays for others, or is simply present. Their
contribution may seem small, but it is of great value.
You also see this in society. A caregiver who does their work with love. A colleague
who lets others shine. Or a parent who encourages their child instead of putting
themselves first. These people show that true strength is often found in humility.
A Question to Reflect On
• Where do I want to be seen or appreciated?
• Do I dare to make room for God and for others?
Closing Thought
John the Baptist shows that humility is not weakness, but strength. Those who do not
need to lift themselves up can help lift others.
Take This With You
• You do not always have to be at the center
• Humility creates space for God
• Small actions can have great meaning
To Close
John 1:27 invites us to live with attention to God and to others. Those who learn to
point to what is greater than themselves discover true peace and purpose. That makes
this message worth sharing.
