John 1:30 (CEV)
“I was talking about him when I said, ‘Someone else will come later, but he is greater
than I am, because he was there before me.’”
What Does This Text Say?
In John 1:30, John the Baptist makes something very important clear. Jesus comes
after him in time, but He is greater than John. Why? Because Jesus was already there
before him. By saying this, John makes clear that Jesus is not just anyone. He has a
special place with God.
This is encouraging. It shows that God does not only begin to work when we see or
understand Him. He is already there. Even when you feel that you are too late, or that
things seem stuck, God is already present. He goes ahead of you.
This text brings peace. You do not have to see everything or keep everything under
control. God is greater, wiser, and further ahead than we can see.
Examples from Church and Society
In the church, you see this when people discover that God was already at work, even
before they realized it themselves. Someone looks back on a difficult time and later
sees: God was already there.
You also see this in society. Think of a job that unexpectedly comes your way. Or a
meeting that later turns out to be important. Sometimes only afterward do you
understand that a path was already being prepared.
A Question to Reflect On
• Where in my life might God already have gone ahead of me?
• Do I dare to trust that God is greater than my situation?
Closing Thought
John points out that Jesus is greater because He was there before everything began.
That gives confidence: your life is not open by chance.
Take This With You
• God is always one step ahead of you
• You do not have to understand everything
• Trust grows when you let go
To Close
John 1:30 invites us to live with trust. Those who believe that God goes ahead of them
can find peace in every new step. That makes this message worth sharing.
