Love that truly matters

1 Corinthians 13:3 (Contemporary English Version)
“I may give away everything I have, and even give up my body to be burned. But if I
don't have love, it doesn't do me any good.”

Historical background
The apostle Paul wrote these words to the church in Corinth, a city full of trade, culture, and differences. In that church, tensions had arisen. People wanted to show how good, spiritual, or important they were. Some impressed with words, others with actions. But Paul points to the core:  without love, everything loses its value.

In that time, honor and status were important, but Paul breaks through that. He says that not achievements, but love is the true measure.

What does that mean today?
This touches something honest. You can do many things that look good, even in the church. You can help, give, stay active. But the question remains: why are you doing it? Does it come from love, or from duty, habit, or maybe the desire for recognition?

In the church, you sometimes see people serving with all their heart, but also that tensions arise among them. Then it becomes clear how important love is. Not only in what you do, but in how you treat one another. A kind word, patience, understanding—that makes the difference.

In daily life
Maybe you recognize it in your work or environment. Someone can be very successful, achieve a lot, yet remain distant. Or someone who is hardly noticed, but shows genuine care for others. Who ultimately makes the greater difference?
Think of a volunteer who faithfully visits people without expecting anything in return. Or someone who listens when you are struggling. That is love in action. In society, much revolves around results, but these words remind you that the heart behind it matters.

Love as a foundation
Love is not only a feeling, it is a choice. Sometimes it asks you to set yourself aside. To forgive, to be patient, or to start again. That is not always easy, but it is what remains.

Final thought
“I may give away everything I have, and even give up my body to be burned. But if I don't have love, it doesn't do me any good.” 1 Corinthians 13:3 (CEV)

Maybe that is the heart of it: without love, in the end, little remains. But with love, even the smallest act gains meaning. And in that, there is something that reaches beyond what you can see.
