Joshua 1:5 (Contemporary English Version)
“No one will ever be able to defeat you. I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I
will never leave you or desert you.”
When you feel alone
There are moments when you can feel alone. As if the responsibility rests on your shoulders and no one fully understands what you carry. Maybe you have to make decisions, take steps, or go through something without clear support.
That is exactly where Joshua finds himself. He stands at the beginning of something big, but also something uncertain. And then God speaks not only about what needs to be done, but especially about who goes with him.
As if He says: you are not standing alone.
Historical background
After the death of Moses, leadership passes to Joshua. That is no small task. Moses was a unique leader, someone who spoke directly with God and guided the people through difficult times.
The people are about to enter the promised land. Challenges, resistance, and unknown territory lie ahead.
At that very moment, God gives this promise. Not only strength or success, but His presence. Just as He was with Moses, so He will be with Joshua.
That is the foundation for everything that follows.
What this means for you
Maybe you recognize that tension. In the church when you receive a role that feels bigger than yourself. A new responsibility, a position where people look to you.
In society it can be the same. A new job, a difficult season at home, or a decision that changes your life.
Then the question can arise: can I really do this?
God’s answer is not: you can do everything.
His answer is: I am with you.
Learning to live from His presence
That changes everything. Because if God is with you, you do not have to become strong first before you can move forward. His presence is not a reward afterward, but a certainty beforehand.
That does not mean there will be no resistance. But it does mean you do not have to go through it alone.
Step by step, you learn to trust—not in yourself, but in the One who goes with you.
Final thought
Maybe you are standing at a point where you think: this is too big for me.
Remember this:
God does not ask you to do it alone.
He promises something deeper than success:
His presence.
He will not let go of you.
He will not leave you.
And that is what makes it possible to keep going.
