Joshua 1:6 (Contemporary English Version)
“Be brave and strong! You will lead these people into the land that I promised their
ancestors.”
When courage does not come naturally
There are moments when courage feels far away. You know what is being asked of you, but inside you hesitate. Can you really do this? Are you ready?
That is exactly where Joshua stands. He is given a huge task: to lead an entire people, to enter a land, to carry responsibility for the future of others. That is no small assignment.
And right then God says: be strong… be brave.
Not because Joshua feels that way, but because he needs it.
Historical background
After forty years in the wilderness, Israël stands at the border of the promised land. Generations have passed. The promise once given to Abraham is about to become reality.
Moses led the people, but now it is Joshua’s role to actually enter the land and divide it. He is not only facing a journey, but the fulfillment of God’s promise through history.
God reminds him: this is not only about you. This is about what I have promised.
What this means for you
Maybe you recognize it. You are facing something bigger than yourself. In the church, it can be a role you have never taken before. People rely on you, while you are still figuring things out.
In society, you see it when someone must take responsibility in a family, at work, or in a difficult situation. You are called forward, while you would rather stay in the background a little longer.
But right there, the same call is heard: be brave.
Courage grows along the way
What is remarkable is that God does not say: wait until you feel courageous. He says: be it.
Courage is not a feeling that comes first. It grows as you take steps. As you keep going, even with uncertainty.
That changes things. You do not have to be perfect. You only need to be willing to go, step by step.
Final thought
Maybe you are facing something that feels intimidating.
Remember this:
you are not alone in what you have to do.
God asks for courage,
but He also gives the promise behind it.
And because He is faithful,
you can take the step forward.
