Genesis 1:2 (Contemporary English Version)
“The earth was barren, with no form of life; it was under a roaring ocean covered with
darkness. But the Spirit of God was moving over the water.”
Historical background
These words come from the very first chapter of the Bible and continue the story of the beginning of everything. At the time they were written, many nations believed that chaos and darkness had the final word. The sea symbolized threat and unpredictability. But here something remarkable happens: right in the middle of that emptiness and darkness, God is present. Not far away, but near. His Spirit moves over the waters, as if preparing something new. That image of “moving” or “hovering” shows care and attention, like a bird over its nest.
What does this mean for our lives?
You may recognize that feeling of emptiness or chaos. Moments when you do not know what comes next. This text shows that it is precisely there, in that uncertainty, that God is present. He does not wait until everything is in order. He begins right in the middle of the mess of life.
In the church you see this when people gather with their questions, pain, or uncertainty. It is not always perfect or well-structured, but there is a desire for God’s presence. In society you see the same: people search for stability, for direction, even when everything feels uncertain.
Examples from daily life
Think of someone who loses their job or goes through a difficult period. Everything feels empty and dark. Yet later you often hear: “That was when something new began.” That is exactly what this text shows. God is already at work before we see it.
Or think of a church that starts small, without resources or certainty. Still, something grows, because people continue to trust that God is present, even in a beginning that still seems formless.
Encouragement
You do not have to wait until your life is “in order” before God can begin. He works in the emptiness. Where you see only darkness, He is already bringing light.
Final thought
The earth was barren and empty, and yet God was already there. That means no situation is too empty or too dark for a new beginning. Trust that His Spirit is still moving, also in your life. That quiet, almost invisible beginning can grow into something new and powerful.
