Revelation 1:17-18 (Contemporary English Version)
“When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. But he put his right hand on me and
said, ‘Don’t be afraid! I am the first and the last. I am the living one. I was dead, but
now I am alive forever and ever! And I have power over death and the grave.’”
Historical background
The book of Revelation was written by the apostle John during a time of persecution and uncertainty. Christians were living under pressure from the Roman Empire, and many were afraid for their future. John received a vision of Jesus—not as the suffering man on the cross, but as the living King with power and authority.
This image was meant to give believers courage. Jesus lives, and He is in control—even over death and fear. That was a radical message in a time when everything seemed uncertain.
What does this mean for you and me?
Maybe you also know moments of fear—fear of the future, of loss, or of things beyond your control. These words of Jesus are personal: “Don’t be afraid.”
In the church, you can see that people sometimes struggle, but it is also the place where this message of hope is heard. When someone prays, sings, or shares their story, a sense of peace can enter.
In society, it is the same. People look for security in work, money, or status, but true peace is not found there. Think of someone going through a difficult time and still experiencing peace—that often comes from holding on to something greater than circumstances.
An encouraging insight
Jesus does not only say that we should not be afraid—He gives the reason: He lives. He has overcome death. That means nothing in your life is beyond His reach.
Maybe your situation sometimes feels dark or hopeless. Yet there is always hope, because He is the Living One. He stands above time, above circumstances, and He knows your life in every detail.
Final thought
“I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever…” – Revelation 1:18 (CEV)
This is the heart of it: Jesus lives. And because He lives, there is hope. Whatever happens, you are not alone. He is near, stronger than your fear, and He holds your future in His hands.
