Joy when people live in the truth

3 John 1:4, Contemporary English Version
“Nothing makes me happier than to hear that my children are living according to the
truth.”

A personal letter full of warmth

The third letter of John is one of the shortest books in the Bible. Yet it contains deep love and wisdom. John probably wrote this letter to Gaius, a believing friend who was known for his hospitality and faithfulness to God. In those days, Christian teachers traveled from place to place. Churches often welcomed them into their homes because there were still very few permanent church buildings.

John was already old when he wrote this letter. That is why his tone sounds almost like that of a spiritual father. He even calls believers “my children.” This shows how important spiritual growth and close fellowship were in the early church.

Living in truth Is more than knowledge

John does not say he is happy because people have a lot of Bible knowledge. He says he rejoices when people are “living according to the truth.” This means faith becomes visible in everyday life.

You can see this when someone remains honest even when lying would be easier. Or when a person stays patient during difficult times. Truth is not only something you know in your mind, but something that becomes visible through your choices.

Even today, churches often desire growth, activities, and full buildings. But John places the emphasis somewhere else. He looks at the hearts of people. Are they truly living with God? Do they treat others with love and faithfulness?

Faith visible in church and society

In society, you can notice how difficult trust has become. People are disappointed by leaders, institutions, and sometimes even family members. That is why a life lived in truth carries great strength. A Christian who lives faithfully and honestly can bring peace to those around them.

The same happens inside churches. Sometimes words are spoken faster than love is shown. But when people truly support, listen to, and help one another, something of God’s Kingdom becomes visible on earth.

Perhaps you sometimes think small acts do not matter much. Yet a simple visit to a lonely person, an honest conversation, or a prayer for someone can make a great difference.

Final thought

“Nothing makes me happier than to hear that my children are living according to the truth.” — 3 John 1:4, Contemporary English Version

God is not looking for perfect people, but for people who sincerely want to live with Him. That often begins in small and ordinary moments of daily life. It is there that faith grows into something that gives hope and trust to others.
