Love as a compass for life

1 Corinthians 14:1 (Contemporary English Version)
"Love should be your guide. Be eager to have the gifts that come from the Holy Spirit, especially the gift of prophecy."

The path that gives direction to everything

These words were written by the apostle Paul to the Christians in Corinth, a large and lively port city in ancient Greece. People from many different nations, cultures, and religions came together there. The Christian church was also diverse and enthusiastic. Yet there were tensions, disagreements, and moments of pride among the believers. Many were strongly focused on spiritual gifts and special experiences. That is why Paul reminded them of an important truth: whatever you do, love must always come first.

Love is more than a feeling

When Paul speaks about love, he is not referring only to a warm feeling. He is describing a way of life. Love becomes visible through patience, kindness, forgiveness, understanding, and genuine care for others. It is the choice to do what is good, even when it is not easy.

Jesus demonstrated this love in a remarkable way during His life on earth. He paid attention to people who were forgotten, rejected, or judged by others. He listened to their stories, helped them in their need, and gave them new hope. Through His example, we learn how God looks at people. His love does not seek its own benefit first but the good of others.

The world still desperately needs that kind of love today. In the church, love helps bridge differences and preserve unity. In society, a kind word, a listening ear, or a helping hand can mean far more than we often realize. Love builds bridges where division exists and brings hope where people feel alone.

God works through ordinary people

Paul encourages believers to be open to the work of the Holy Spirit. God gives gifts, talents, and opportunities to serve others. But those gifts achieve their purpose only when they are carried by love. Without love, even the most beautiful words lose their power.

God still uses ordinary people to make His love visible. Sometimes He works through an encouraging conversation, a prayer, a Bible verse, or a simple act of kindness. Often, the smallest actions can make the greatest difference in the life of someone who feels discouraged, lonely, or worried.

Final thought

Paul points us to a simple yet profound truth: always let love come first. Knowledge, talents, and achievements have their value, but love gives them meaning. When God's love fills our hearts, it changes our words, our choices, and our relationships. We become a source of hope, peace, and encouragement to those around us. A life guided by love reflects the heart of Christ and brings light into a world that longs for it every day.
