Hebrews 1:1-2 (Contemporary English Version)
"Long ago in many ways and at many times God's prophets spoke his message to our ancestors. But now at the end of these days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God made his Son responsible for everything. His Son is the one through whom God made the universe."
God makes himself known
The letter to the Hebrews was written to Christians who were going through difficult times. Some faced opposition because of their faith. Others struggled with doubts and wondered whether following Jesus was truly worth it. It was in those circumstances that the writer directed their attention to a powerful truth: God has spoken, and His clearest message is found in Jesus Christ.
The historical background makes these words especially impressive. Throughout the centuries, God revealed Himself in different ways. He spoke through prophets such as Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. Through their words, God revealed His will, His love, and His plans. But according to the writer of Hebrews, something even greater eventually took place. God did not simply send another messenger; He sent His own Son. In Jesus, God's character became visible. Whoever sees Jesus comes to know God's love, grace, truth, and faithfulness.
Jesus reveals the heart of God
Many people have questions about God. Some wonder whether He truly exists. Others question whether He is involved in their lives. The message of Hebrews is clear: God is not distant or silent. He has made Himself known through Jesus Christ.
When we look at the life of Jesus, we see how God relates to people. We see His compassion for the sick, His concern for the lonely, His patience with those who are searching, and His grace toward those who have made mistakes. Jesus shows that God does not reject people but invites them to come close to Him. Even today, people experience this reality. In the church, many find comfort in His words during times of grief and loss. In society, people discover new hope as they learn to trust His guidance and promises.
A voice that still speaks today
God's message does not belong only to the past. Through the Bible, He still speaks to people today. When we read the words of Jesus, we discover direction for our lives, wisdom for our decisions, and hope for the future. His words bring light when we doubt and peace when we are troubled. The better we come to know Jesus, the better we understand who God is and what His purpose is for our lives.
Final thought
Hebrews 1:1-2 shows that God does not leave people in uncertainty. He spoke through the prophets, but ultimately He spoke through His Son. Therefore, we do not have to guess what God is like. In Jesus, we see God's love, faithfulness, and desire to bring people close to Himself. Those who listen to Him discover a God who speaks, guides, comforts, and saves. His message is just as relevant today as it was then: God knows us, seeks us, and invites us to live close to Him. His words provide direction for today, strength for difficult moments, and hope for the future.
