Walking in God's light

1 John 2:11 (Contemporary English Version)
"But if you hate others, you are in the dark. You don't know where you are going, because you can't see in the dark."

Love shows the way

The apostle John wrote these words to believers who were living in a time of division, tension, and spiritual confusion. Some people spoke a great deal about God, but their attitude toward others told a different story. Therefore, John makes it clear that faith and love cannot be separated. Those who truly live close to God will show it by the way they treat other people.

The historical background makes this message even more powerful. In the Greco-Roman world, differences between people were often very significant. A person's background, wealth, and social status often determined how they were treated. The Christian church stood in sharp contrast to that culture. Rich and poor, Jews and Gentiles, men and women came together as one family. Love for one another became the visible evidence that God's light was at work in their lives.

Light gives direction

John uses the imagery of light and darkness. Light provides direction, safety, and clarity. Darkness causes people to lose their way and prevents them from seeing where they are going. According to John, the same thing can happen in the human heart. When anger, jealousy, bitterness, resentment, or hatred take control, we lose our spiritual direction. Relationships become damaged, and peace disappears.

We see this today as well. In society, conflicts can divide families, friendships, and communities. In churches, misunderstandings and old wounds can create distance between people. But wherever love is present, there is room for healing, forgiveness, and renewed relationships. Love does not mean that everything is easy. It means choosing to treat others the way God treats us—with patience, grace, and respect.

The way of Jesus

Jesus showed what God's love looks like in practice. He sought out people who were rejected by others. He forgave those who had made mistakes and gave hope to those whose lives had fallen apart. His life demonstrates that love is not merely spoken—it is shown through actions. Even today, a kind word, a listening ear, a helping hand, or a forgiving attitude can make a greater difference than we often realize.

Remember this

Love is more than a feeling; it is a choice. Hatred darkens the heart, but love brings light. Bitterness keeps people trapped, but forgiveness opens the door to healing. Those who live close to God learn more and more to love as Jesus loved.

Final thought

1 John 2:11 reminds us that God's light shines most brightly through people who walk in love. When we choose not to hold on to bitterness but to live with grace and love, we become a reflection of God's heart. In this way, we bring hope where there is discouragement, peace where there is division, and light into a world that needs it every day.
