James 1:19–21 (Contemporary English Version)
"My dear friends, you should be quick to listen and slow to speak or to get angry. If you are angry, you cannot do any of the good things God wants done. You must stop doing anything immoral or evil. Instead, be humble and accept the message God has planted in your hearts to save you."
When listening is difficult
Everyone longs to be heard and understood. Yet we often react more quickly than we listen. A careless word or an angry response can cause deep pain. Perhaps you have experienced this yourself. The Bible invites you to become quiet first, to listen carefully, and only then to speak. As you do, understanding grows, peace replaces conflict, and there is room for genuine love.
A message that still gives direction today
James wrote these words to Christians who were scattered outside Israël. They were facing opposition, tension, and difficult circumstances, which often led to arguments and misunderstandings. James showed them a better way: do not be controlled by anger, but by God's wisdom. That message is just as important today. We live in a world where opinions are shared instantly, yet people often fail to truly listen. God's Word teaches that a listening heart is stronger than a loud voice.
God's wisdom is seen in everyday life
In the church, unity grows when people listen to one another, pray together, and forgive each other. In everyday society, the same wisdom is seen when a neighbor takes time for someone who is lonely, a colleague remains calm during a disagreement, or a friend listens without judging. These simple acts bring peace and inspire fresh hope.
Final thought
Perhaps today is the right moment to respond less quickly and listen more carefully. God knows your heart and speaks through His Word. Those who learn to listen to God also learn to listen to others with love. In this way, peace grows, trust is restored, and you will discover that God's wisdom gives direction to your life every single day.
