When you would rather hide

Genesis 3:8–9, Contemporary English Version
‘“… So they hid behind some trees. The Lord God called out to the man and asked, ‘Where are you?”’

When you want to disappear

You have hurt someone and leave their message unanswered. Not because you do not care, but because you are afraid of the conversation. Or after a church service, you say you are fine, although you feel sad inside. You do not want anyone to judge you. Hiding can feel safer than honestly saying what is going on.

A voice among the trees

Genesis, the first book of the Bible, tells of Adam and Eve in a garden. They have done something God told them not to do. When they hear him approaching, they hide among the trees. Their fear and shame make it hard for them to stand openly before him.

Then God calls, “Where are you?” Adam will have to face what he has done. Yet God does not leave him alone and silent in his hiding place. God speaks to him first and gives him room to answer.

Perhaps that question feels close to home. Where are you with your regrets, your sadness or your longing to begin again? An honest answer can be difficult. Sometimes it helps when a friend listens calmly. Or when someone at church says, “You do not have to make your story sound better than it is. I have time for you.”

Final thought

Perhaps you think your past keeps you away from God. Christians believe Jesus shows that God keeps seeking people, even when they withdraw. You can come to him with your questions and mistakes. You do not have to prove yourself first. If God asked you today, “Where are you?”, what would you honestly want to tell him?

A prayer

“Jesus, sometimes I hide what is on my mind. Give me the courage to be honest with you and with someone I trust. Help me come to know your love. Amen.”
