John 1:2 (KJV)
“The same was in the beginning with God..”
Encouragement: your start is not the real starting point
Sometimes it seems as if everything depends on your beginning:
- the first step
- the right choice
- a new plan
- or finally “doing better”
But John 1:2 reverses the order. Even before your start, before your new resolution,
before your brokenness or shame, He (Jesus) was already with God.
That little sentence (He was already with God) carries something big: God's reality did
not begin with you. So you don't have to build something from nothing.
‘This’ refers to the Word from verse 1: God revealing Himself, close to the Father. That
means: God is not only available when you are strong or understand everything. He is
already there. And because He was already there ‘in the beginning’, He is also reliable
in your midst, especially when your beginning feels uncertain.
In church
At baptism and confession, you often hear: God chooses first, God calls first. People
take a step, but that step is a response to God's initiative. That gives peace of mind:
you don't have to prove yourself to be welcome.
In society
Many people live under pressure: to perform, to present themselves, to “make”
themselves. This can cause social tension, because everyone has to conform. John
1:2 offers a different story: your value does not depend on your performance, but on
God's presence that was already there.
A moment to reflect
Where am I trying to carry my life with my own strength, while God says, “I was
already there”?
Closing thought
John 1:2 encourages us: you don't have to earn the beginning. God is already there,
before you take your step.
Take this with you today
Today, pick one situation that you find stressful (work, family, health). Say in a short
sentence: ‘Lord, You were already there — walk with me.’
You may want to share this with someone in the church or a trusted friend. Together,
you can remind each other: it is not our strength that is the foundation, but God's
abiding presence.
