Standing firm in what truly matters

1 Corinthians 15:58 (Contemporary English Version)
My dear friends, stand firm and don’t be shaken. Always do your best in the work of the Lord, because you know that your work in the Lord is not useless.”

Historical background
The church in Corinth lived in a busy, influential city filled with trade, culture, and many competing religions. It was a place where ideas clashed and where faith was constantly under pressure. Some believers began to question whether their efforts really mattered. Paul writes these words at the end of a chapter about the resurrection. He explains that because Jesus is alive, everything you do for Him has meaning. This was crucial in a society where faith was often challenged by philosophy, wealth, and moral confusion.

What does it mean to stand firm?
When you read this, it feels like a kind of encouragement you sometimes really need. Standing firm doesn’t mean life is easy. It means you keep going, even when things are difficult. In church, you see it in people who faithfully serve, even when they receive little recognition. In society, you see it in someone who chooses honesty when others take shortcuts.

It’s about perseverance—not because you are strong on your own, but because you trust that what you’re doing matters.

Examples from daily life
Maybe you recognize the feeling: you give your time, you pray, you try to do what is right, but you don’t always see results. That can be discouraging. Yet this verse says it’s not meaningless.

Think of someone who cares for others year after year. Or someone who keeps believing despite disappointment. These are not small things. They carry value, even when it’s not immediately visible.

Why this gives hope
What stands out is that nothing you do for God is wasted. In a world where results need to be visible right away, this offers a different perspective. God sees what is hidden.

Final thought
“Your work in the Lord is not useless.” – 1 Corinthians 15:58 (CEV)

Maybe you feel tired or wonder if it’s all worth it. But this word says: keep going. What you do—no matter how small it seems—has meaning. And God does not forget.
