Ephesians 1:13–14 (Contemporary English Version)
Christ also brought you the truth, which is the good news about how you can be saved. You put your faith in Christ and were given the promised Holy Spirit to show you belong to God. The Spirit also makes us sure that God will give us what he promised.”

Historical background
The letter to the Ephesians was written in a time when believers lived in a complex society filled with religious influences, power structures, and uncertainty. Ephesus was a center of trade and spirituality, where people served many gods and searched for security through rituals and symbols. In that world, Paul says something very powerful: your security is not found in what you do, but in what God has done in you. The Holy Spirit is described as a seal, a mark of ownership and protection. In ancient times, a seal meant: this belongs to someone and is safe.

What does it mean to be ‘sealed’?
Reading this, it feels like God is saying: “You belong to Me, and that will not change.” That is deeply personal. It is not about a distant truth, but about a living relationship. The Holy Spirit is the divine presence in your life.
In the church, you sometimes see people struggling with doubt: am I good enough, do I really belong? This text says the exact opposite. You are already accepted, already marked as belonging to God.

Examples from daily life
Think of someone who feels uncertain about their future. Work, relationships, health—everything can feel unstable. Yet inside, there is still a sense of peace. Not because everything is clear, but because that person knows: I am not alone.
Or think of a community under pressure. Differences, tensions, maybe even division. But when people refocus on God’s promise, unity and hope begin to grow again.

Why this gives hope
What stands out is that the Holy Spirit is called a “guarantee.” That means: a certainty that what God has started, He will also complete. In a world where so much is uncertain, this gives deep confidence.

Final thought
“The Spirit also makes us sure…” – Ephesians 1:13–14 (CEV)
Maybe you are wondering where to find security. Maybe life feels uncertain or fragile. But this message says: God has not let go of you. He has given His Spirit as a sign that you belong to Him—now and forever.
