1 John 4:10 - (CEV)
“Real love is not our love for God, but his love for us. God sent his Son to be the sacrifice by which our sins are forgiven.”
A message of love in a divided world
The apostle John wrote this letter during a time when many Christians were struggling with uncertainty, division, and doubt. People argued about faith, but sometimes forgot to love one another. Some spoke beautiful words, while their attitudes remained cold or distant. That is why John brings the focus back to the heart of the gospel: true love does not begin with people, but with God.
This message was important for the early Christians, but it may speak even more strongly today. Many people long for love, peace, and connection, while at the same time many relationships have become shallow or broken. People often feel lonely despite all the noise and contact around them.
Yet God shows a different kind of love. Not a love that first demands something in return, but a love that begins by giving.
God loves people before they seek Him
That is what makes this Bible verse so powerful. John does not say that people first loved God, but that God first loved people. His love is not based on performance, perfection, or success. He knows human weakness, pain, and brokenness, and still He draws people toward Himself.
Many people carry hidden burdens. Feelings of guilt. Disappointment. Fear of not being good enough. People in the church may struggle with these things, but people in society do as well, often trying to prove their worth through success, appearance, or the approval of others.
God sees differently. He does not only look at what is visible on the outside, but at the heart of a person. His desire is not to push people away, but to bring restoration, peace, and hope to those who have become weary or lost.
Love that changes people
When someone truly understands how deeply God loves them, it changes the way they look at others. There is more patience, more compassion, and more willingness to forgive.
Sometimes a small gesture seems unimportant: listening to someone, giving attention, or speaking a kind word. Yet those moments can bring hope to a tired or lonely heart.
Just as light fills a dark room, God’s love brings warmth, peace, and new life into people.
Final thought
1 John 4:10 shows what true love really is. Not that people first searched for God, but that God first loved people. His love is greater than guilt, stronger than disappointment, and deeper than human failure. That is why you do not need to be afraid to come to God. He knows you, does not forget you, and loves you.
