Amos 5:14 - Contemporary English Version
“Choose good instead of evil! See that justice is done. Then you will live, and the Lord God All-Powerful will truly be with you, just as you claim he is.”
A message of hope in a restless world
The prophet Amos lived during a time when Israël appeared rich and successful. Trade was growing, people went to the temple, and outwardly life seemed good. Yet God saw something different. The poor were neglected, honesty was disappearing, and many people were living mainly for themselves. Behind the beautiful appearance, hardness, injustice, and division were growing.
It was in that time that God spoke through Amos. Not only to warn people, but also to bring them back to what is truly good and valuable. God’s message was clear: seek what is good.
Those words still sound relevant today. Many people now live with tension, disappointment, and uncertainty. People can become tired because of worries, distrustful because of experiences, or hardened because of pain. In a world where self-interest often comes first, God still calls people to continue choosing love, honesty, and goodness.
Goodness often begins small
Many people think doing good means great and impressive actions, but often it begins in small moments of everyday life. A kind word to someone who is struggling. Remaining patient when tension rises. Being honest while others choose convenience or selfishness. Listening to someone who feels lonely.
In the church, you see people faithfully serving without seeking attention. People who pray for others, visit the sick, or quietly help wherever help is needed. In society as well, there are people who, despite disappointment, still choose kindness, respect, and peace.
Those small acts have great value in God’s eyes.
God looks at the human heart
Amos shows that faith is more than words or outward appearance. God looks at how people live and how they treat others. His desire is for love, justice, and honesty to become visible in everyday life.
That does not mean people must be perfect. Everyone stumbles at times. But God encourages people to keep choosing what is good and sincere.
Just as a small light remains visible in a dark room, one person can bring hope through love and goodness.
Final thought
Amos 5:14 reminds us that goodness is never meaningless. In a world full of unrest and disappointment, God’s call remains the same: keep seeking what is good. Small acts of love, honesty, and faithfulness can bring hope into the lives of others. Wherever people choose what is good, something of God’s heart becomes visible.
