Galatians 5:13a – Contemporary English Version
“My friends, you were chosen to be free. So don't use your freedom as an excuse to do anything you want.”
When freedom is more than doing whatever you want
Perhaps you want to break free from guilt, addiction, or pain from the past. You try to begin again, but some things seem stronger than you. The Bible speaks about freedom. Jesus gives you the freedom to love and live differently.
Freedom under pressure
Paul wrote to the churches in Galatia around AD 50. Some teachers claimed that non-Jewish believers had to obey the Jewish law to belong to God. Paul explained that no one can save themselves through rules or achievements. Forgiveness and freedom are received through faith in Jesus Christ.
Jesus sets you free from sin so that love can guide your choices.
Free to give love
Freedom becomes visible when people serve one another. A church gives someone another chance. A volunteer stands beside someone struggling with addiction. Neighbours help a family in need. Love does not ask only, “What do I want?” but also, “What does the other person need?” This creates room for restoration.
Jesus paid the price for this freedom. He carried our guilt on the cross and rose from the dead. Therefore, you do not have to save yourself.
Final thought
Perhaps you feel trapped by mistakes, shame, or habits. You do not have to free yourself first. Come to Jesus just as you are. Pray: “Lord Jesus, forgive me, set me free from sin, and renew my life.” Whoever trusts Him receives grace, a new beginning, and strength to live in love.
