Daring to become small

Luke 14:11 – Contemporary English Version
“If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.”

When you do not have to prove that you are important

People long for recognition. Perhaps you want others to appreciate your efforts. But when your value depends on attention, achievements, or position, restlessness grows. Jesus points to another way: humility.

The struggle for the best seat

Jesus spoke these words during a meal at the home of a Pharisee. A person’s place at the table showed how important they were. The guests chose the most important seats. Jesus warned that anyone who pushes themselves forward may be moved back. Someone who chooses a humble place may be invited forward.

Humility does not mean that you are inferior. It means that you do not treat others as less important. You do not have to place yourself above someone else to be valuable. God’s love determines your worth.

Making room for others

Humility becomes visible in the church when a leader listens and gives others room. In society, you see it when a colleague shares the credit, a neighbour invites someone who is lonely, or a volunteer helps without expecting applause. Humility does not seek the spotlight but notices others.

Jesus chose the lowest place. He came to serve and gave His life on the cross for our sins. Then He rose from the dead. Through Him, you can receive forgiveness.

Final thought

Perhaps you are tired of trying to prove that you matter. Jesus invites you to find rest in Him. Pray: “Lord Jesus, forgive my pride and renew my heart.” With Him, you do not have to earn your place. His grace gives you a value that no one can take away.
