Deuteronomy 11:16 Contemporary English Version
But watch out! You will be tempted to turn your backs on the LORD. And if you worship other gods
You take on another shift, keep checking your phone, and try to keep everyone happy. At first, it seems like part of a busy life. But one day you notice how restless you feel when no one appreciates what you do or a plan falls through. Where do you turn for support then?
Historical background
Moses spoke to the people of Israël before they entered the promised land. After years in the wilderness, they would build homes and work the fields. They would also meet neighbors who worshiped other gods. So Moses warned them about something that could happen quietly within them: their hearts could turn away from the God who had led them.
What do you put your trust in?
You may never bow before an idol. Even so, something else can quietly take first place. You work harder and harder because you think you only matter if you succeed. You never say “no” because you’re afraid of disappointing people. Or you’re so busy helping at church that you no longer make time to pray or listen to someone.
Moses’ warning invites you to pause. What gives you peace? And what happens when you lose it? You can bring those questions to Jesus. Tell him honestly what frightens you and what you’re holding on to. You don’t have to put your life in order first.
Final thought
Even if you have wandered away from God, you can turn to him today. Begin with a simple prayer. Ask Jesus to teach you to trust him and to see the people around you again.
A prayer
Lord Jesus, You know my heart. Show me what has taken first place. Forgive me where I have lost sight of You. Help me let go of what controls me, and teach me to trust You. Amen.
